Pathways to Prosperity Project

About the Pathways to Prosperity Dashboard

The “Pathways to Prosperity Project” will develop actionable and scalable solutions to address the “wicked problem” of mobility from poverty around the world. The solutions will inform better decision-making and policy and empower individuals and communities to break free from the poverty trap and realize better living outcomes.

What the Dashboard Measures

The Dashboard presents Mobility Metrics — empirically grounded predictors correlated with upward mobility — organised across five interconnected pillars of support:

  • Opportunity-Rich & Inclusive Neighbourhoods
  • High-Quality Education
  • Rewarding Work
  • Healthy Environment & Access to Good Healthcare
  • Responsive & Just Governance

These pillars reflect the supports that individuals and households need from community development organisations, donors, government — especially at the subnational level — and institutions to climb the mobility ladder. The metrics are anchored in a framework that defines upward mobility across three mutually reinforcing dimensions: long-term economic success, dignity and belonging, and power and autonomy.

Coverage

The Dashboard provides a snapshot of mobility conditions for:

  • All 36 states and the FCT
  • Local Government Areas sampled in the Nigeria General Household Survey-Panel (GHS-Panel), including Area Councils in the FCT and select zones across Nigeria

15 metrics are available at the State and FCT level.

13 metrics are available at the Local Government Area (LGA) level.

Coverage at LGA level is limited to areas sampled in the underlying survey with sufficient data to compute each metric reliably. Where LGA-level data is unavailable — due to survey attrition, small sample sizes, or conflict-affected inaccessibility — state-level data can serve as a proxy, and vice versa.

Pathways to Prosperity Project

Description:

The “Pathways to Prosperity Project” will develop actionable and scalable solutions to address the “wicked problem” of mobility from poverty around the world. The solutions will inform better decision-making and policy and empower individuals and communities to break free from the poverty trap and realize better living outcomes.

The project will consist of the following:

Research: Rigorous scientific research to characterize the current dynamics of upward mobility in communities and develop actionable solutions to create mobility pathways out of poverty to a better living condition for individuals and households. Research outputs will include Working Papers, Policy Briefs, Policy Memos, and Articles

Data: Community, regional and national level data on the geography of upward mobility, poverty and inequality around the world.

Interactive Dashboard/Atlas: An interactive dashboard that leverages innovations in geographic information systems (GIS), big data and decision science to develop data-driven “prosperity pathways” out of poverty and low living standards for households and local communities.

Policy Initiatives: Policy initiatives will be developed as the project evolves to ensure that the insights and actionable solutions from the research projects are translated into scalable initiatives and inform better decision-making and policies to improve economic mobility and opportunity in local communities.

Status: Ongoing
